Although social media has been around for quite some time, many people still don't realise the potential dangers that may lurk between the status updates and photo shares.
Keep yourself out of harm's way (and out of trouble!) by following these easy guidelines:
- Only post something on social media if you don't mind the entire world seeing it - including your grandmother and your employer.
- Don't post or share anything that could harm someone else's reputation or dignity - YOU could be held liable.
- Never put anything that is confidential online. This includes medical records, information about court proceedings and nude pics.
- Don't make jokes about terrorist or other violent/destructive acts. Such posts can very easily be used as evidence against you should something happen.
- Be the champion of your own security online. Never give out personal information, and ensure that your security settings are up-to-date.
- Stay off social media when you've had one too many drinks. When intoxicated, you could say things you would never dream of when sober.
By following these simple guidelines, you can enjoy social media without worrying that something will come back to bite you.
