Insurance is necessary to protect you, your loved ones and the things you've worked hard to own. But in order to get a payout, you need to make sure you follow the rules, and provide the insurer with everything they need.
If you have a complaint, or your insurer won't pay out for your claim, your first step should always be to talk to your insurer, and see if you can sort things out without having to take it further. If this doesn't work, there is always a legal body that governs how insurers operate and ensures fair treatment of clients.
- For cellphone and car insurance, you can go to the Short-Term Insurance Ombudsman
- For medical aid, there's the Medical Schemes Council
- And for life insurance, there's the Long-Term Insurance Ombudsman.
(Please note: This is only general advice and should not be relied on solely. The law is complicated and there are many influencing factors that can change the above).
