With so much of what we do being online these days or through apps on our phones, cyber criminals are getting smarter and smarter at targeting their victims. Make sure you're not one of them by keeping these 4 tips in mind:
1. TREAT YOUR PERSONAL DETAILS LIKE GOLD – Do not provide your personal details unless you are absolutely sure that the person/organisation/business/retailer/bank/website etc. asking for it is genuine and that they have a legitimate reason for needing it. If you have any doubts, do not answer any questions and shut off contact.
2. DON'T FALL FOR THE CHARMERS – Cyber criminals can be charming, persuasive and convincing, making you believe that if you don't take action immediately you will lose a fortune. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably isn't true. This includes things like donations to a person or a cause to secure a special reward from a long-lost love, an ancestor, a religious leader or a spiritual healer.
3. THERE'S NO SHORTCUT TO WEALTH – It's unlikely that a stranger you've never heard of, never contacted or never come across before in your life would consider giving or offering you considerable wealth. Scammers love to use the fake inheritance scam, claiming that some distant relative of yours has left you money and that you just need to give them your bank account details so they can pay it in. Watch out.
4. EVERYONE IS FAIR GAME – When they look for their victims, criminals don't distinguish between educated/uneducated, employed/unemployed, poor/rich, old/young, healthy/sick. Remain cautious, alert and wary – it's your best protection.
