Specialist Motor Vehicle
Case: Lwazi bought a car and soon after, the car started showing faults. Lwazi informed the dealer, who booked the car in for repairs. Then he received a letter from the dealer’s attorneys saying that they cannot be held liable for any repairs since the car was bought second-hand. Luckily, Scorpion’s Thandi Ntamane from the Specialist Motor Vehicle Department came to the rescue and firmly reminded the car dealer’s attorneys of the Consumer Protection Act. The dealer’s attorneys backed down and the dealer agreed to pay for the repair work. Lwazi was overjoyed.

Specialist Insurance
Case: William went in for an operation that his medical aid had approved. But afterwards they said they would not pay the doctor. Scorpion exhausted all the insurer’s internal procedures, and eventually took the dispute to the Council for Medical Schemes. The insurer then paid the doctor in full. William was very grateful for the assistance.

Specialist Foreign Nationals
Case: Mike and his family have refugee status and want to apply for a permanent residence permit. They needed a certificate of exemption to be able to apply. Mike came to Scorpion for help, as the outcome had been long overdue. Scorpion’s legal counsellors sent a letter to the secretary, member and chairperson of the Standing Committee for Refugee Affairs (SCRA) to get Mike’s application expedited. But they didn’t leave things there. They hounded the SCRA until they confirmed that Mike and his family have been issued with a certificate of exemption, meaning that they are now recognised as refugees and are given permission to apply for a permanent residence permit. Mike was very happy with the outcome.

Specialist Contracts
Case: Susan was being hounded by a company claiming her husband had rented a machine from them in 2012 and she owed them. However, they could produce no record of this. Scorpion’s legal counsellors made it clear that the alleged debt had prescribed, and was therefore no longer legally enforceable. They also advised Susan not to communicate with the company, and to direct any correspondence to them to avoid getting tricked into admitting liability and reviving the prescription. Susan was delighted with the help and guidance she was given, and thanks to Scorpion, the company backed off and didn’t contact her again.
