According to the Financial Intelligence Centre, one of the biggest scams South Africans fall victim to is the "fake job scam". Scammers post a job online. When they get responses, they tell the applicants that a telephonic, Skype, or instant message interview needs to be conducted.
Applicants are then notified that they will be responsible for the cost of the background checks or credit score checks. They direct you to a website where you have to put in your personal information like your name, physical address, identity number, banking details and contact details. This information is then abused by criminals for fraud and identity theft.
Legitimate employers will not charge you to be interviewed or employed.
