October was Mental Health Awareness Month in South Africa, a time to focus on well-being. We know that life’s challenges can often lead to stress and anxiety, and at Scorpion Legal Protection, we’re here to help lighten that load.
Legal issues, whether it’s workplace bullying, letters of demand, retrenchments, dismissals, income tax issues or neighbour disputes, can be significant sources of stress, impacting your mental health. That’s why our legal services go beyond just advice; we offer peace of mind. Legal expenses insurance is about having a safety net — knowing you’re protected and won’t have to bear the high cost of a lawyer. With a small monthly premium, you get affordable access to expert legal support, allowing you to focus on what truly matters — your well-being.
We also know that life’s challenges can go beyond legal and financial issues. Many of our members face personal difficulties that require more than just legal solutions. That’s why we’ve partnered with Families South Africa (FAMSA) to offer a social worker referral service. This service helps members deal with personal challenges like marital problems, grief, and stress — situations where emotional support is as crucial as legal advice. Our social worker referral service is one of the added benefits you receive as a Scorpion Legal or Funeral Plan member, providing holistic support when you need it most.

Taking care of your mental health is important. No one knows this better than the social workers who deal with these issues for a living. 9 important reasons to take mental health seriously.
1. Overall Well-being: Your mental health affects how you think, feel, and act, playing a vital role in your ability to handle stress and make decisions.
2. Physical Health: Good mental health is closely linked to physical health. Chronic stress and poor mental health can lead to issues like heart disease, and high blood pressure.
3. Quality of Life Maintaining your mental health improves your relationships, work performance, and daily functioning, helping you enjoy life to the fullest.
4. Productivity: When your mind is healthy, you are more focused, productive, and creative, leading to better outcomes at work or school.
5. Emotional Resilience: Taking care of your mental health builds resilience, helping you bounce back from life’s challenges more easily.
6. Prevention: Regular mental health care can prevent the development of mental health disorders or lessen their impact if they do arise.
7. Relationships: Healthy mental well-being fosters positive relationships and better communication.
8. Self-Care: Prioritising mental health encourages self-care, personal growth, and greater fulfilment.
9. Community Impact: Addressing mental health reduces stigma on a larger scale, creating a more supportive society.

Through our services*, we offer:
- Legal Support: We take the weight of legal challenges off your shoulders, providing expert advice and support in areas like workplace bullying, dismissals, consumer disputes, and family law.
- Social Worker Referral Service: Many of our members face personal challenges alongside legal ones, and that’s where our partnership with Families South Africa (FAMSA) comes in. We provide access to social workers who can help you manage stress, grief, and family issues.
- Income Tax Assistance: Tax season can cause unnecessary anxiety, but depending on your chosen policy our specialist tax department is here to make it easier by assisting with tax returns and any unexpected issues with SARS.

Expert advice: "First and foremost, it’s important to understand what mental health is. This enables us to avoid all the stigma and ostracism that comes from lack of understanding and more often translates into stigma and exclusion of people who are diagnosed with a mental health condition. To this end, awareness, acceptance and knowing how to deal with various mental health conditions and those who have it, is key in providing support."
- Makha Thusi (FAMSA National Executive Director)
