Celebrating 30 Years of Access to Justice
On 1 June 2026, Scorpion will mark an important milestone, 30 years of helping South Africans stand up for their rights.
When Scorpion started in 1996, legal assistance felt out of reach for many ordinary people. It was often seen as expensive, intimidating, and complicated. But what people really wanted was simple; the ability to stand up for themselves and be treated fairly. That belief shaped the foundation of Scorpion Legal Protection.
As one of the early pioneers of affordable legal expenses insurance in South Africa, Scorpion set out to make legal protection practical and accessible, not just for those who could afford private legal services, but for ordinary South Africans who simply wanted support when something went wrong.
Over the past three decades, we have helped thousands of members deal with a range of legal challenges, especially unfair dismissals & retrenchments, as well as other workplace disputes.
In many cases, these matters were resolved through guidance, negotiation and practical solutions that helped members move forward with confidence.
While our purpose has remained constant, the world around us has changed significantly.
Workplaces have evolved. Regulations have become more complex. Technology has transformed the way people communicate and access services.
Expanding access has always been part of our approach. Long before digital support became common in many service industries, we were already investing in ways to make legal assistance easier to reach. So, we kept evolving, responding to our members’ needs, changes in the law, and the different ways people want to access support.
Today, that support extends across the country through:
Specialist legal teams handling complex matters
Modern digital service channels allowing members to reach us quickly and conveniently
Access to justice should never depend on income level. It should depend on fairness.
As we celebrate this milestone, we are proud of how far we have come, but even more proud of the members who have trusted us over the past three decades.
And the commitment that started it all remains unchanged:
Helping South Africans stand up for their rights and Strike Back Legally!

Three Decades of Progress in Service Access
Over the past 30 years, Scorpion has steadily expanded how members access legal protection and support. What started in 1996 as a bold idea has grown into a national organisation with multiple ways for members to connect with legal help when they need it most.
How Scorpion Expanded Service and Access
Members always come first at Scorpion.
Legal challenges rarely affect only the legal issue itself. They can affect income, family stability and peace of mind.
Over the past 30 years, the legal landscape in South Africa has become more complex and the pressures faced by ordinary people have grown.
Listening to our members’ experiences has always been one of the most important ways we improve what we offer. Their real-life situations help shape how we strengthen our protection and services.
Over time, we have introduced additional benefits and products designed to support members when life becomes complicated, including the introduction of the Scorpion Funeral Plan — combining funeral cover with support such as wills and legal guidance, backed by legal professionals.
That reflects our belief that families should not have to navigate financial and legal complexity alone during a difficult time.
Many Scorpion members are surprised to discover how many services and benefits are included with their legal policy membership.
Depending on the option you have chosen, in addition to your cover for labour, civil, and criminal matters, your membership may include additional benefits such as:
Premium Waiver Benefit for qualifying cases

These developments aim to strengthen the offering and ensure it continues to meet the evolving needs of members and their families.
More information on the additional product enhancements will be shared in future editions of The Sting.
Thirty years is not built by policies, systems, or buildings. It is built by PEOPLE.
- The member who picked up the phone when something felt unfair.
- The consultant who listened carefully and explained the next step.
- The network attorney who prepared thoroughly and stood firm.
- The long-serving staff member who has seen the company grow from a bold idea into a national presence.
Maria Langa*, a long-standing Scorpion member from a village in Venda, recently faced a frightening situation when SARS notified her that she owed R576,000 in taxes.
Shocked by the assessment, she contacted Scorpion for assistance.
Our specialist tax team quickly identified the issue. After selling her primary residence, Ms Langa had transferred funds between her bank accounts when making payments. SARS treated these transfers as undeclared income, leading to the tax assessment.
Our team submitted a formal objection, explaining that the funds were simply movements of the original property sale proceeds and not additional income.
When SARS only partially accepted the objection, we took the matter further and submitted a formal appeal, compiling detailed reconciliations of several years of bank statements across multiple accounts.
After a lengthy process, SARS ultimately accepted the submission and resolved the matter in Ms Langa’s favour.
Instead of owing money, the case ended with a refund due to our client.
Stories like this remind us why professional guidance and conquering adversity matter. And why having someone in your corner can make all the difference.
